Earlier this year, I was beating myself up for all the things I “should” be doing.

I wasn’t publishing daily.

Built only two resources to help people.

Had not invited anyone to check out my ebook, Tame Your Monkey Mind.

Even beat myself up for not journaling daily — even though I was regularly taking notes in my mental health therapy journal.

What was happening here?

Was I avoiding, procrastinating, and playing with bright and shiny new things?

Yes, to all of the above — but I was wrong in assuming this was 100% of the time management issue.

As it turns out, I spent time being available to the people I am committed to doing life with, and I was learning how to devote attention to self-care — and I wasn’t giving myself credit for any of those things!

I needed to ease up on myself and understand how to apply different self-improvement frameworks — or pause them — within the context of what’s most important to me right now.

Can you relate?

I’m here to give you permission (as if I’m anybody who could do this) to take a deep breath and realize you can’t do all the self-improvement things.

You get to choose.

But how?

What if you could wrap words around your value system? So you could remind yourself, “I didn’t get Priority A done because Priority A needed my attention.

As it happens, AI gives you the tools to solidify your values — in the context of reality in the near term…

Constructing a Values Filter

A Process for Redefining Now Priorities

Step 1: Identify a Role Model

Think about someone in your life whom you admire, respect, and aspire to be like. It could be a family member, friend, mentor, or even a public figure. Take a moment to reflect on their qualities and how they embody their values.

Step 2: Uncover Shared Values Consider the values that your chosen role model lives by.

What principles do they prioritize in their life? Additionally, think about other people in your life who also exhibit similar values. Their presence can offer further insights into the significance of these values.

Step 3: Observe Interactions

Pay attention to how your role model and other value-driven individuals engage with others, including yourself. Notice their communication style, actions, and how they contribute positively to their relationships. This observation will provide valuable guidance as you shape your own value-based behaviors.

Step 4: Extract Attributes with Chat GPT Now, it’s time to bring Chat GPT into the mix.

Dump the attributes you’ve collected from your observations into a chat session with Chat GPT. It will help refine and distill the core values you’ve identified.

Step 5: Transform Values into Actions

Take your refined values and translate them into tangible daily actions. Ask Chat GPT questions that can guide you toward potential actions aligned with your values.

These simple, actionable steps will empower you to embody your values in your everyday life.

When you work through this process, you will end up with more aspirational values than you can work on immediately, which is exactly what you want — values options instead of values obligations weighing you down.

Which “should” habits do you need to ditch for the time being?
